Maintaining his relevance is something that UMkhulekelwa is an expert at. As some of his successes start to lose their appeal, he just released "Akenibe amadoda," a three-track EP that is presently topping the charts.
Maskandi doesn't require as much excitement and expectation as other genres that are prevalent in the South African music landscape. When an artist wants to release a project, they just push it out; there is no extended wait or elaborate publicity.
As an example of such a release, "Akenibe amadoda" by UMkhulekelwa is already generating a tonne of exposure.
The three tunes that make up "Akenibe amadoda" include "Silala eMahhotela," which is presently topping the charts and ranking 13th on YouTube music, featuring UMzukulu.
For the first time in a long time, we get to hear the unadulterated essence of the Maskandi sound—the kind of upbeat sound we are familiar with and adore—and we are grateful for the inventiveness UMkhulekelwa explored here.
